Gender Stereotype in Jobs

Hello, everyone. Today I want to talk about gender stereotype in jobs.

First, I would like to invite all of you to imagine a scene. One day, a CEO of a Fortune 500 company drove the son to the interview. After the interview, the son got in the car happily. Suddenly, he received a call. A deep voice said, “Congrats on getting the job!”  It was his biological father. Here comes the question. What’s the relationship between the CEO and the son?

This is a quiz participated by several hundred people, most of their guesses include the person being his stepfather, or adaptive father, or maybe they are a gay family and he has two fathers. There are so many odd answers. Few people gave the answer, it is his mother, which is the real answer. They were all surprised when revealing the answer that the CEO is the boy’s mother. Why didn’t I realize the CEO is actually his mother, they thought.

That’s because many of us have subconsciously assumed that the positions like CEOs, regional managers, chief inspectors are exclusive to male. Unfortunately, it’s true. [Let’s look at these 2 graphs.] It has been shown that there are nearly 75% of the chief inspectors and 80% of the high-paid technicist are male in 2019. Here comes another question, what makes it so many men on a high-paid job? Is it because males are more qualified for the work? This type of thinking is called gender stereotype. According to the table, we can get the information that mathematical ability isn’t related to the gender. Also, we can look at our Reading&Writing textbook, on page 67, where the form shows us clearly that abilities between males and females are almost the same.

Moreover, in real life, companies take women’s working age into consideration. In their fixed mind set, women need to get married and have kids after certain age, which will shorten their career life. Also, they think that women’s working efficiency will decrease after getting married or getting pregnant. They believe that women’s focus should be on family instead of their work, which is an outdated and insulting thought. Women’s working age is not limited by their life decisions, these are old thoughts. They have the ability to keep a good balance between work and family and men and women should have the same opportunities. Women’s rights are human rights. Women should deserve it.

Men and women should have the same opportunities, not only on jobs. Emma Watson said at the UN, it’s time that we perceive gender on a spectrum instead of two sets of appraising ideals. Men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.

听到同学说,老师给的反馈是一边听我讲一边点头。但最后还是没有改想改的地方——quiz部分——得到的反馈是没有太能听懂,所以加上了红字部分。
